Bilingual Support at Lütjenburg Gymnasium -

Information on the "Bili Pre-Course" and Bilingual Classes

Lütjenburg Gymnasium offers its pupils the opportunity to take part in bilingual lessons. This means that Geography will be taught in the English language in the 7th and 8th grades. For the affected pupils, this replaces the normal geography lessons in German.

Language ability itself is not taken into account where assessment is concerned, but active, assessed participation in the lessons requires an increased language level.

We therefore offer, beginning in the second half of the school year in the 5th grade, a “Bili Pre-course”, in which we seek to assess the language ability of the pupils using fun and creative tasks. Attending the pre-course in grade 5 and 6 is a requirement for participation in Geography lessons in English (“Bili”) from the 7th grade.

The pre-course is given in addition to regular lessons. We would like to make it expressly clear that the pre-course is not an extra lesson of English, and that it is not assessed.

Pupils are asked if they wish to take part in the pre-course at the end of the first half of the year. The conference at which pupils’ report cards are discussed then decides which pupils will then be required to attend.

At the end of the 6th grade, pupils are once again asked if they wish to continue bilingual lessons into grades 7 and 8.
